What a PRS Coil Split Actually Does
A standard humbucker uses two coils wired in series. That series connection is what produces the higher output and hum-canceling performance associated with a humbucker. Coil splitting redirects the connection between those coils to ground, leaving one coil active when the switch is engaged.
The split sound is not exactly the same as installing a dedicated Strat or Tele single-coil pickup. A humbucker coil sits in a different physical position, uses different magnets and winding specifications, and may have a different output level. Still, a good split-capable pickup can deliver a convincing bright, articulate alternative that makes a two-humbucker PRS much more versatile.
There is a trade-off: a full split lowers output and removes hum cancellation. That is normal. Whether it is the right choice depends on your pickup, amp gain, and how much authentic single-coil character you want. Before You Wire PRS Coil Split Switching
Start by confirming that your pickup has four insulated conductor wires plus a bare shield, or another clearly identified four-conductor configuration. A traditional two-conductor humbucker cannot be split without opening the pickup and modifying its internal wiring.
Also identify the pickup manufacturer and its color code before soldering anything. There is no universal wire-color standard. PRS pickup lead colors can differ by era and model, and aftermarket pickup brands use their own schemes. The pair of wires that connect the two coils in series is often called the series link, coil junction, or finish-to-start connection. That is the pair your split switch must access.
Do not rely on wire colors from an online diagram unless the diagram matches your exact pickup. A quick check of the manufacturer documentation prevents the most common coil-split wiring mistake: grounding a coil lead that should remain part of the signal path.
You will typically need a push-pull or push-push potentiometer, solder, a temperature-controlled soldering iron, wire cutters, heat-shrink tubing or electrical tape, and a multimeter. For a PRS upgrade, make sure the replacement control fits the cavity depth and knob type. Many PRS guitars use metric hardware, while many premium aftermarket pots use imperial shafts and mounting threads. Measure before ordering parts.
How to Wire PRS Coil Split With a Push-Pull Pot
A push-pull pot combines a standard volume or tone control with a DPDT switch. The switching section has six lugs arranged in two columns of three. Each column works as its own switch pole, so one push-pull pot can split both pickups at once or handle one pickup plus another switching function.
For a basic two-humbucker PRS coil split, the practical goal is simple: keep each pickup wired normally for full humbucker mode, then use the switch to ground each pickup's series link when you pull the knob.
Keep the Main Pickup Connections Intact
First, wire the pickup hot lead to the same selector-switch point used in the original harness. Connect the pickup ground and bare shield to the common ground point, usually the back of a pot or a dedicated ground terminal. These connections remain in place whether the pickup is full or split.
The series-link pair is different. Instead of permanently grounding it, solder the two series-link wires together and insulate that joint if your pickup instructions call for it. Run a separate insulated wire from that series-link junction to a center lug on one side of the push-pull switch.
Use the Switch to Ground the Series Link
Connect one outside lug in the same three-lug column to ground. A short wire to the back of the pot is common, provided the solder joint is clean and secure. When the push-pull switch connects the center lug to that grounded outside lug, the series link is sent to ground and one coil is bypassed.
Use the other three-lug column for the second humbucker. Its series-link junction goes to that column's center lug, while the corresponding outside lug goes to ground. Now one pull of the control can split both pickups.
The exact upper or lower outside lug you use determines whether the pickups are split when the knob is pushed down or pulled up. Most players prefer full humbucker mode with the control down and split mode with it pulled up. Before final assembly, use a multimeter's continuity setting to identify which lugs connect in each switch position. Push-pull switch orientation can be confusing when viewed from different angles, and testing takes less time than reworking a finished harness.
Choosing Which Coil Stays Active
A conventional split grounds one side of the series link, but the coil that remains active affects the sound. On a bridge humbucker, retaining the coil closer to the bridge generally produces a sharper, tighter split sound. Retaining the coil closer to the neck can sound rounder and may blend more naturally with a neck pickup.
This is also where pickup phase matters. If the split bridge and split neck pickup sound thin and hollow in the middle selector position, one pickup may be electrically out of phase with the other. Correcting phase is not always as simple as swapping two wires, particularly with shielded leads and certain wiring schemes. Follow the pickup maker's phase guidance, and test both pickups before closing the cavity.
A purpose-built coil-split pickup makes this decision easier. Pickups designed for splitting are often balanced so that the remaining coil has usable output and a musical EQ profile rather than sounding weak or overly brittle.
Consider a Partial Coil Split Instead
A full coil split grounds the series link directly. A partial split places a resistor between the series link and ground. Rather than completely removing one coil, the resistor leaves part of that coil in circuit. The result is typically fuller, louder, and less abrupt than a complete split.
For players who use high-gain amps, gig in noisy venues, or want a more practical clean-to-crunch transition, a partial split is often the better choice. Common resistor values fall in the several-kilohm range, but there is no one correct value. The pickup's DC resistance, magnet type, and your preferred amp setting all matter.
You can install the resistor between the switch's grounding lug and ground. When the switch engages, the series link reaches ground through the resistor rather than a direct connection. Experimentation is worthwhile here. A lower resistance behaves more like a full split, while a higher resistance retains more of the second coil and more of the humbucker's body.
Common PRS Coil Split Wiring Problems
If the guitar goes silent in split mode, revisit the series-link identification and inspect for a stray ground connection. If it is silent in both modes, check the pickup hot lead, selector-switch connection, and output-jack wiring before blaming the pickup.
A thin, nasal sound in the middle position often points to a phase issue. Excessive hum when split is expected to a degree because one coil is active, but loud buzzing that stops when you touch the strings may indicate a missing bridge ground or poor cavity grounding. Scratchy operation is usually a dirty or overheated pot, while intermittent switching often comes from a weak solder joint on the push-pull lugs.
Keep solder joints small and deliberate. Overheating a pot can damage its internal track, and excess solder can bridge closely spaced switch terminals. A quality harness built around dependable pots, switches, and properly terminated pickup leads is not just easier to install - it is far more likely to stay quiet and dependable after months of rehearsals and shows.
Test Before Closing the Control Cavity
Plug into an amp at a clean setting and test each selector position with the push-pull control down and up. Tap each coil gently with a small screwdriver while the guitar is plugged in. The active coil will make a clear tapping sound through the amp, making it easy to confirm that the intended coil remains on in split mode.
Then test at your real stage gain. Listen for a useful volume balance, a clean middle position, and a split sound that earns its place rather than existing as a novelty. If a full split feels too thin, a partial split or a split-optimized pickup can make the modification far more musical. Done carefully, this is one of the most effective ways to give a familiar PRS the range to cover more of the set with confidence.
